State Qualifiers Fall Short
MaryAlice Lynch and Kyle Bashaw had the opportunity to compete at the MHSAA State Finals in Detroit, Michigan at the start of the month. Kyle lost both of his matches in the D4 190 bracket and MaryAlice fell in the blood round of the Girls 110 Division. Both wrestlers had incredible seasons! We look forward to seeing both wrestlers excel in their future!
FWC Youth Season Comes to a Close
The final tournament of the FWC youth season was at Monroe High School on Saturday March 16th. This was the sixth tournament of the Monroe county tournament circuit. These events helped our wrestlers test themselves and get better each week. 15 FWC wrestlers competed at the event finishing with 1ST’s from Lincoln Hicks, Aiden Beidler, and Branson Gilbert, 2ND’s from River Cole, Declan Cole, Liam Roberts, Rowan Gilbert, and Gabe Flowers, 3RD’s from Lincoln Pierce, Nova Trent, Brad Byron, Ben Byron, and Luna Trent, and 4TH’s from Porter Madrid and Kaitlyn Rodriguez.
The season was capped off in ultimate fashion with klondike bars and ice cream cookie sandwiches at the last practice.
Two Place at MYWAY State
MYWAY is Michigan’s premier wrestling association. They host over a dozen tournaments during the regular season before providing a regional and state tournament for its members. Christian Craanen placed 6th in the state in the 2009 - 107 lbs division and Kyle Bashaw finished 6th in the HS 2005-07 - 193 lbs division. Henry Wickenheiser also qualified for the tournament.
Varsity Team Earns Scholar Awards
SMCC Wrestling earned MWA Team Academic All State for the 2024 season. This was awarded for having one of the highest team average gpa in Division 4 with an average gpa of 3.48 and it signifies that our wrestlers work hard both in the classroom and on the mat. This is the third year in a row that SMCC Wrestling has received the award with the average gpa increasing each of the last three years.
Several individuals also earned All Academic awards. MaryAlice Lynch achieved MWA Academic All State for the 3rd year in a row. This is awarded for being a state qualifier and maintaining a gpa above 3.7. Additionally, Eric Mathies, Davis McDonald, and MaryAlice earned Academic All League which is presented to seniors with the highest GPAs in the league.
Cuccia’s Corner
Well Falcons/Kestrels, the regular season is over and the off season has began. And we are ready to begin it with you. The coaches are setting up programs for the off season and if you want to get a jump on it all you have to do is ask. I’ve said it numerous times this year, wrestlers are not made in the season, wrestlers are made in the off season. What are you doing to get better? Well we are here to help you get better, but only you can make the decision to do so. Only you can get up early to go for that run. Only you can choose to do the workout we designed for you instead of playing video games with your friends. Life is full of decisions, and only you can make the decision to get better.
Remember one thing, if it were easy everyone would do it. So dig deep and decide what you want to do, and when you make that decision, and you commit to that decision, we will be here to help you meet your goals.
May God continue to Bless you all.
Coach Cuccia
Happy Easter From SMCC Wrestling
We hope everyone has a joyous Easter celebration! Remembering Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross helps us put into perspective our own trials of everyday life. Working out becomes nothing compared to carrying the cross and financial burdens fade in comparison to being nailed and hung on the cross. We should work on being grateful for the obstacles God puts in front of us because through them we become better. And Jesus’ Resurrection reminds of his promise of life everlasting as a reward for being His followers and for being good people. So enjoy the chocolate eggs and the Reese’s peanut butter cups but remember the cross and to show gratitude for our loved ones during this joyous Holiday!
